7 Things to Keep in Mind During Your Job Search

There’s a lot to consider when you go on a job hunt. You know that much-needed step forward for your career is potentially just a click away, but it’s never that simple, either.

Here are seven things to keep in mind:


1. Be Honest with Yourself

If you’re a recent college graduate, you’ll want to focus on entry level positions, rather than jobs that require five years of full-time work experience. And, if you just learned about internet browser tabs last week, an IT Specialist position is probably off your radar. Don’t wade too deep or you’ll likely drown.

2. Don’t Look Desperate

If you’re overselling yourself or applying to seven different positions at the same company, not only do you look sloppy, but you look like you’re begging for a job. You never want a reputation like that. Your biggest asset as a candidate is being in demand, and someone that has options isn’t desperate.


3. Don’t Be Afraid to Think Outside the Box

If the job posting says to apply through an online portal, don’t let that stop you from looking for the hiring manager’s email address and then sending your application that way instead. You might just impress your potential employer by showing that you’re willing to go the extra mile.

4. Don’t Pursue Unverified Job Postings 

Always make sure both the source listing the job post and the listing itself  can be verified. A classified for a fry cook position at The Krusty Krab is probably fake.

5. Clean Up Your Online Presence 
Everything you post on social media can and will be used against you by prospective employers if it paints you in a negative light. Maybe don’t upload that video of you and your friends at that clu-, err, restaurant.

6. Don’t Send the Same Resumé and Cover Letter for Every Job You Apply For 

Not only is it ridiculous to expect the same boilerplate text to be appropriate for every lead you pursue; it’s also obvious to most hiring managers that they’re looking at something that might as well say “insert company name/job title here.” Make sure you’re emphasizing the specific skills and key aspects of each job you’re applying for, and that you’re tailoring your cover letter and resumé to them.

7. Don’t Limit Your Resources
